The problem of missing character ("gaiji" in Japanese) is always a severe one in the process of electronizing Chinese Buddhist texts. Understanding the need for a set of missing Chinese characters, The Center for Buddhist Studies, National Taiwan University, called a meeting last year to promote the making of Chinese missing characters for Buddhist Texts. During the conference Dr. Hsueh and his staff in Academia Sinica took the full responsibility to produce a set of "Supplement Character Set for Buddhist Text" with the cooperation of many other organizations, such as Fo-kung-san, Si-lien Monastery, Electronic Buddhadharma Society (EBS) , Taipei Youth Buddhist Association, etc. After nearly 2 years' enthusiastic work, the "Supplement Character Set for Chinese Buddhist Text" with 2037 missing Chinese characters (or gaiji in Japanese) finally comes out. It contents a glyph database that implements in IBM compatible PC with Windows 3.1 operating system and with Chinese Extension (Taiwan Version). Moreover, it is specially designed for the majority-use Big-5 Code. This set of "Supplement Character Set for Chinese Buddhist Text" can be downloaded freely from the homepage of the Digital Buddhist Library and Museum at <<http://ccbs.ntu.edu.tw>> in "Computer Codes for Chinese Usage."
