This section, "A Journey to the West", presents the main themes of this program from a literary perspective.

We have now completed sections for two of the main characters of A Journey to the West: Character 1 and Character 2. In the first year we completed modern colloquial Chinese translations and comic strips for the chapters titled "大戰紅孩兒" and "大鬧天宮". The chapter titled "真假孫悟空" has been recently added, with a modern colloquial Chinese translation and comics included.

A Journey to the West is the most widely known popular folktale of Xuanzang's travels throughout the western regions. We will select some of the best chapters of this novel, such as 大鬧天宮, 唐僧出世, 悟空歸正, 三打白骨精, 紅孩兒, 火燄山, 金光寺, 連環洞, 天竺國, and 取經功成, and provide the original text, a modern colloquial Chinese translation, and an English translation for comparison and to better explain the story of A Journey to the West. Cartoon comic-strip illustrations are utilized to provide a more vivid understanding of the story of A Journey to the West, and important allusions in the text are connected and corresponded with major themes in selections from The Great Tang Records of the Western Regions, for mutual comparison and consultation.
